This month's news ............. Please continue to pray for the children, the staff, the choice of a new Head teacher and the new building. St. John’s School newsLearning = School ( … or does it?) We’ve been encouraging the children this year to think big and keep busy – to appreciate that you learn through everything you do in life, not just through the daily lessons at school. Every new activity, every conversation, every new person you meet, all have the potential to teach you something and so its important to use your time and experiences wisely both in and out of school.
Blackpool Young People’s University was set up to encourage children to get busy learning out of school hours – we were one of the first schools involved and to date 12 of our children have graduated from the university, 6 with the top award! To graduate with this top award “Gold with Honours” each child has to provide evidence they have completed over 180 hours of out of school learning activities. The range of activities the children are involved with is amazing -from cheerleading to football, from playing in bands to learning an instrument, from water polo to swimming, from ice-skating to horseriding and not forgetting Sunday School, uniformed organisations and The Ark (the after school faith club we have in school). The awards presented by the Young People’s University are a fantastic way of encouraging children to get involved, to be active and most importantly to see learning opportunities in all they do, not just as something you do at school.
We’ve decided living = learning, and school is just one part of that! Jo Snape
See the latest newsletter - July 2008 A comment ... A friend who is a teacher at a well known local high school with its fair share of challenging children said to me recently – “What do you do to the children at St. John’s School? We notice them because of their politeness, good behaviour and their willingness to work hard.” “Well,” I said, “We only do what any good school should be doing!” “Yes”, came the reply, “We do have children who obviously come from good schools but St. John’s boys and girls really stand out from the crowd”. Well done, teachers, boys and girls, and all those who contribute to the St. John’s School community. We’re obviously doing something right!
